What makes a Japanese luxury melon so special?
Is it the sweetness? The careful craftsmanship? Or is it the story that begins long before harvest? To find the answer, I traveled to Aomori Prefecture in northern Japan as part of the Ikigai Fruits team to visit Farm Hanakotoba, where our organically grown Ukiyo-banare Melons are carefully cultivated.
This wasn't simply a farm visit—it was an opportunity to discover the craftsmanship, care, and people behind one of Japan's most extraordinary luxury melons.
During my visit, I met the farmer behind every melon, learned about the meticulous care that goes into growing each one, and witnessed something truly unforgettable. One of our Ukiyo-banare Melon Ownership Program members had traveled all the way from the United States to finally meet both Mr. Yamazaki and the melon they had been following for months.Watching that moment unfold reminded me that this program is about much more than receiving a premium melon. It creates a genuine connection between people, nature, and the hands that grow exceptional fruit.
Before taking you through my visit to Farm Hanakotoba, I'd first like to introduce the Ukiyo-banare Melon itself—and explain what makes this experience unlike any other.

What Is the Ukiyo-banare Melon Ownership Program?
First, "Ukiyo-banare" means "far removed from this world." In other words, it represents something truly extraordinary. True to its name, this melon is rarely available even within Japan. Rather than appearing in ordinary fruit shops, it is often reserved for exclusive restaurants and discerning customers seeking one of Japan's finest luxury fruits.
The Ukiyo-banare Melon Ownership Program offers a completely different way to experience premium fruit. Instead of purchasing a melon after harvest, members become the owner of a specific melon while it is still growing on the vine. Each melon receives a personalized name tag, and throughout the season, Mr. Yamazaki shares regular updates about its growth, weather conditions, and the farming process.
By harvest time, every melon has a story—and members have been part of it from the very beginning.

Welcome to Farm Hanakotoba
Farm Hanakotoba is located in Tsugaru, Aomori Prefecture—an area blessed with beautiful natural surroundings and an ideal climate for producing premium fruit. Although best known for its organically grown Ukiyo-banare Melons, the farm also cultivates a variety of seasonal fruits and vegetables, including grapes, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, and more.
Walking through the farm, I was immediately struck by the incredible attention to detail. Every greenhouse reflected Mr. Yamazaki's dedication, and every crop was carefully nurtured. Seeing the healthy soil and tasting freshly harvested produce reminded me that exceptional fruit always begins long before harvest—with thoughtful cultivation and deep respect for nature.
Especially the main reason why Aomori is perfect for growing premium melons is the weather. Aomori's fresh air, cool evenings, and significant temperature differences between day and night create ideal conditions for developing exceptional sweetness and aroma. Combined with Farm Hanakotoba's careful cultivation methods, these natural conditions allow every Ukiyo-banare Melon to reach its full potential.
Meeting the Farmer—and Your Melon
Spending time with Mr. Yamazaki gave me a whole new appreciation for what it takes to grow a single luxury melon. As we walked through the greenhouses, he explained every stage of cultivation—from selecting the healthiest fruit on each vine to carefully adjusting farming methods according to changing weather conditions. Listening to him, I realized that growing premium Japanese melons isn't simply a profession—it's a lifelong commitment built on patience, experience, and an unwavering pursuit of quality.

A Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience
The highlight of the visit was watching our Ownership Program member finally stand beside the melon they had followed for months, with their own name attached to the fruit still growing on the vine. Meeting Mr. Yamazaki in person and walking through the very greenhouse where their melon had been carefully nurtured transformed the experience into something far more meaningful than simply ordering fruit online.
It's not every day you get to meet the farmer behind your food—let alone visit the exact place where it was grown.
Before we left, Mr. Yamazaki harvested one of the Ukiyo-banare Melons and invited us to enjoy it together.
I can honestly say it was the best melon I've ever tasted. It was incredibly sweet, remarkably juicy, and filled with a rich aroma unlike any melon I'd had before. Knowing the amount of care and dedication behind every single fruit made that first bite even more unforgettable. At that moment, I couldn't help but feel a little envious of everyone who had already reserved one this season.

More Than a Luxury Fruit
Before visiting Farm Hanakotoba, I knew the Ukiyo-banare Melon was one of our most exclusive products. After experiencing the farm firsthand, I finally understood why.Luxury isn't defined only by sweetness or appearance. It's found in the people who dedicate themselves to growing each fruit, the land that nurtures it, and the story that begins long before harvest.
Over the past two seasons, I've had the opportunity to hear from many of our 2025 and 2026 Ownership Program members, and their feedback has been remarkably consistent—they never regretted becoming part of the experience.
After visiting the farm myself, I completely understand why. If you have the opportunity to join next season's Ukiyo-banare Melon Ownership Program, I highly recommend it.
You're not simply purchasing one of Japan's finest luxury melons—you're becoming part of the story behind it.
