About Ukiyo-banare Melon

The Ukiyo-banare Melon, grown at Hanakotoba Farm in Aomori Prefecture, is an exclusive, reservation-only fruit never released to the Japanese mass market. The name “Ukiyo-banare” means “far removed from the mundane,” reflecting a melon that is truly extraordinary in taste, appearance, and presentation.

Benefiting from the dramatic temperature shifts of northern Japan, it develops exceptional sweetness and remarkable quality. Each melon is meticulously cultivated by Mr. Yamazaki, who carefully controls water and growth to ensure dense flesh and refined flavor. The result is an intensely fragrant melon with rich, elegant sweetness.

Served at select high-end restaurants in Minami-Aoyama, Tokyo, this is a rare luxury known only to a privileged few.

Hanakotoba Farm, rooted in the fertile land of Aomori, is a small, family-run farm located in Tsugaru City, Aomori Prefecture.
The farm cultivates carefully selected varieties of fruits and vegetables with great care and dedication, striving to produce only the highest quality.To maintain this standard, they do not distribute through conventional markets, but instead sell exclusively through a reservation-based system.

Ideal Farm Location and Land Features for Melon Cultivation
The farmland is ideally situated near the Sea of Japan and features sandy soil rich in high-quality minerals—an ideal environment for melon cultivation.
The soil’s excellent drainage further enhances growing conditions, making it perfectly suited for producing high-quality melons.

Honoring the Family Legacy

"The reason I started growing melons is because my parents were originally melon farmers, so I decided to carry on their legacy and strive to grow even better melons," says Mr. Shinya Yamazaki, representative of Hanakotoba Farm. 
While he initially cultivated the Takami melon—a variety commonly found in Aomori Prefecture—Mr. Yamazaki emphasizes that it’s not just about the variety, but about who grows it and how it’s grown. His goal is to produce the best melons possible.
